Dynamic Textures
2021 Interaction Design
What if we communicate with objects through tactile sensation?
Inspired by the communicative potential of skin-to-skin contact with horses used by equestrians, I explored the possibility of tactile interaction with everyday objects ( e.g. phone, controller, and handle.)
Based on the series of initial experiments on tactile parameters, I focused on the potential of subtle movement on the object surface:
Dynamic Textures
I conducted exploratory user testing with prototypes that mechanically generate tactile alterations, and examined the tactile affordances of different movements, speeds and orientations, as well as their potential applications.
In the future, using MEMS technology, it will be possible to fabricate a skin within approximately 2mm thickness and alternate its texture by contracting a micro-balloon array using the volume change caused by the electrolysis of water.
