HMW reincarnate 20C urban remains into 21C infrastructure?
The road network built for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics has deteriorated and is facing a major turning point ahead of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
By reinterpreting the 'underground tunnel' as a '600m long concrete tube', it is transformed into an environmental system that generates air temperatures of around 15-20°C all year round. The air-circulating architecture on the ground level is designed to utilise the seasonal winds, allowing natural ventilation of the building's interior by sucking up the air from inside the tube.
This project creates a public space in Tokyo to let everyone enjoy the benefits of the urban remains, and transforms the Circular Highway, a symbol of Japan's modernisation, into a humane infrastructure for the 21st century.
